Since leaving Flosstradamus back in December 2016, Josh Young has been up to a lot. Aside from spending some well-deserved quality time with his adorable wife and kids, he’s rebranded himself as YehMe2, remixed xxxtentacion’s “looking for a star” and is set to debut at Hard Summer in LA later this summer.
His free Steal This Mixtape 2 release party at SmartBar Monday evening attracted both loyal Flosstradamus followers and EDM fans simply curious to know more about the producer that has exploded onto the scene over the past few months.
The latter part of his set gave us an idea of the niche he’s trying to carve out for himself. He incorporated rap and hip hop tunes as well as some trap and EDM favorites, sampling tracks from artists like Party Favor, San Holo, Quix and more. He pulled in Dabow’s newly released banger “Olé“, “Hellifornia,” a classic by Gesaffelstein, and of course, Josh Pan and Medasin’s “The Zoo.”
In May, Young stirred up a lot of talk on social media by teasing STM2 with snippets of songs he’s been working on. Set to relaunch in the EDM community as a solo artist, he posted a minute-long video on Instagram every day in May of new tracks and remixes likely to be featured in STM2. Sometimes he’s wearing a funky hat. Sometimes he’s combing his kid’s hair. Sometimes his wife guest stars and steals our hearts away.
If anything, YehMe2’s prolific social media content and engagement shows how he’s managed to totally depart from his old Floss ways and build a new organic following for himself. His new stuff sounds nothing like Floss. The Chicago duo used to put out fiery trap tracks that would send festival crowds into a frenzy, but Young’s new productions are inspired by everything from Latin music to old jazz tunes. His new sound is slowed down and incorporates more hip hop beats, and then there’s that signature “YehMe2” sound byte he slips into his songs.
