Baby Steps

“You should do it,” he urges. “Show them who you really are.”

My voice trembling; “I’m not sure if I’m ready to go that far.

The timing’s not right; it’s overdue; it’s too early.”

“No more excuses,” he says, his smile all white and pearly.

I mumble, “They won’t like it; I can’t handle that kind of rejection.”

He grins. “The only thing you should expect is their love and affection.”

“I’m not strong enough to endure the judging from my peers.

I feel exposed to the world, only able to hide behind my fears.”

“The world needs your spice, your spunk, your ardor.

They crave your emotion, your passion; they’ll want to try harder

To connect with you, in the way that you have with them.

This spirit of yours. It’s selfish to hide, a true gem.

Once word of this gets out, you’ll arouse; you’ll inspire.

Your words, like sparks in a dry prairie, will spread like wildfire.”

I smile, let out a deep breath I’ve been holding for far too long, and take a baby step into the world, relieved of all my dread.

Upon reading this, what comes to mind?
