31 things you may or may not have known about me

  1. When I was small, I wanted the conventional Labrador retriever as a pet, and I wanted to name it Spanish Sweetheart. I have no clue where the name came from, and a small part of me still wants a golden lab named Spanish Sweetheart.
  2. I don’t have a religion. I was brought up Christian and considered myself atheist for a large portion of time before realizing that I felt uncomfortable defining myself as such before knowing what the term actually entailed. That being said, the way that my life operates right now, the concept of religion plays a minimal role in my life, and faith carries little significance, so we’ll leave it at that.
  3. I’m acquiring an accent, but I can’t figure out what kind of accent it is.
  4. Sometimes I listen to music for the sole purpose of being defiant. I’ll find a song and come to love it simply because I want to be blasting it in the car and I want the person parked next to me to look over in horror. I want someone to look at me, expect a certain music taste, and be absolutely confused when I start jamming to something totally unconventional.
  5. I can’t handle stress well.
  6. I am extremely vulnerable to caffeine.
  7. I love my dentist as a person, but I hate seeing him. Thus, I obsessively keep my teeth clean to avoid visiting him as much as I can.
  8. I’ve worn glasses since 2nd grade, and got contacts in 6th grade. I’m legally blind without them.
  9. I despise lots of types of people but I am each one of them in my own way. I get furious just thinking about: backstabbers, people who don’t do work but take credit for it, people who refuse to admit that they are wrong, fake people (HATE FAKE PEOPLE), people who sacrifice their legitimacy for humor, and thus begins a long list that we don’t have enough space to accommodate.
  10. I work less at some things than people expect, but simultaneously work harder at other things than people expect. And we’ll leave it at that.
  11. I prefer being alone; I used to not want to be this way, but now I’m much more comfortable with the idea. I can’t be around people for too long, and that’s okay.
  12. Long before I started shaving, I took my mom’s razor and shaved my mustache area. It was an enlightening experience.
  13. I’d rather be cold than hot but I’d also rather be hot than cold – my opinion just depends on what time of year it is.
  14. I used to be obsessed with lotion – in 6th grade, I brought an economy-size bottle of baby lotion that I kept in my locker, that smelled up the whole commons and made me the subject of every sixth grade girls’ judgment.
  15. I have many more male friends than I do female friends, and I’m not sure why that is.
  16. The only TV network I actually watch on my TV is the Food Network. Not kidding, I know that channel back and forth; no one knows more than me. I’ve sampled every show, watched at every hour, and have concluded that my favorites are the following: Giada at Home, the Barefoot Contessa, Good Eats, Nigella Express, the Pioneer Woman, and the Best Thing I Ever Ate.
  17. As a toddler, I had a habit of rubbing – nay, stroking – my nose. I’d take my finger and run it in circles on my nostril. I can feel your judgment now.
  18. Even though I used to play lots of sports (tennis, swimming, cross country, track, lacrosse, ice skating, soccer, etc) my fitness routine has been reduced to taking walks in my neighborhood a few times a week. My only form of exercise is pulling on Vans and walking over to the prettiest cul-de-sac I’ve ever encountered, imagining that I lived there and wondering if it’s a street straight out of the 1940’s.
  19. I have straight hair, but I want wavy/curly hair. Meanwhile, curly-haired girls are constantly pining for straight hair like mine. Interesting, how we always want things that we can’t have.
  20. I aspire to live in a picture perfect little apartment in New York City, a total original and extraordinary dream that no one else has ever had, totally unprecedented. Yup.
  21. If I could have it my way, I’d get by somehow financially (marry rich?) and stay at home and write my blog all day. Not kidding.
  22. I got my first kiss when I was 16.
  23. I’ve played violin since 4th grade, and because of it, I’m uncomfortable with long nails.
  24. I didn’t start listening to MUSIC until 6th grade, when my mom changed the radio away from NPR.
  25. I shy away from contacting people first (whether through text, phone call, or chat message) because I fear bothering them.
  26. I’m very conscious about putting people’s names on this blog or writing about overly sensitive/personal topics – for example, love and romance.
  27. I have no clue who reads this blog, I just check numbers occasionally, but really, y’all are ghosts.
  28. My favorite cartoon movie is definitely Howl’s Moving Castle, but there are lots of awesome Disney/Pixar/etc. movies out there that are strong contenders for 2nd place.
  29. I haven’t seen lots of famous movies: Inception, the Avengers, Avatar, Lord of the Rings, Star Trek, Star Wars, Skyfall, the Dark Knight, etc.
  30. I shed hair like crazy. Not sure if it’s my ethnicity or just me, but I constantly have to clean my carpets and my shower drains because it’s sort of nasty how much hair falls out of my head.
  31. Sometimes on weekends, I stay up past 2AM writing on my online journal about thoughts.

I enjoyed this. My wife and I only watch the national news on TV. But she’s addicted to the Food Network. She adores The Barefoot Contessa (and her sweet hubby, Jeffery. But we watch a lot of Netflix through our Apple TV. That’s the best 8 bucks a month I’ve ever spent.

Even at my advanced age I still blast the music in my car with the windows down. What I blast most of all is my beloved DooWop from the 50s and early 60s on either the 50s on 5 channel of Sirius sat. radio or my iPod.

News! I’m a high school debater, so I typically get my news from online sources, while doing research at the same time. But I love Ina Garten! Watching her show right now.
Also, keep blasting your DooWop. Ignore the stares and live a little! That’s hilarious, and I hope you keep enjoying that experience. – Catherine
