16 thoughts and reflections from my Monday

PS. Special preview at the bottom!

1. On reader/writer efforts…

As academics, we are always trying to bridge some sort of gap between being an intelligent reader and a clear writer. We both read and write articles. In my seminar class, I am learning how to read articles to reap as much insight from them as possible, but also how to write essays that require the reader to do minimal work.

Sure, we may all innately realize this, but today was the first time I explicitly acknowledged that the better we are as both readers and writers, the smarter we can be.

2. As much as we hate classes…

Having a class you need to attend at this certain time is a great way to recover from a weekend that was…particularly lacking in structure.

No gray area, no interpretation. You have to be there, and you have an assignment/reading due at this time.

3. When you just don’t have the motivation to leave your room…

Sometimes you just need to blast a good song and dance around your room in front of your mirror to get ready for the day.

4. Have something to look forward to…

By making concrete plans with your friends.

5. But at the same time…

Be prepared to spend sometime by yourself, which forces you to reflect and listen to your own voice. Take yourself on dates.

6. And then when you psych yourself out about texts and social media posts…

Consider (just consider) going tech-free for a period of time.

7. On feeling like you’re forgetting something…

Or lots of things…

Go back through all of the emails that you didn’t check this past weekend and catch up on what you missed.

8. On addressing priorities…

Have an afternoon (like this one!) dedicated to acknowledging and dealing with whatever priorities and important obligations you have!

9. Doodling is actually kind of deep…

The images that I draw are probably a bit meaningful. Today, in class, my margins were covered in mediocre sketches of eyes, hands, bare backs, spiders, and flowers with five petals.

10. If I were to get a tattoo…

I have thought about this a lot, and have concluded that if I am destined to get a tattoo, I should not rush into it. I have considered many tattoos…a potato…

I thought about another potential one today.

A simple five-petaled flower. It’s the first thing I draw when I start to daydream and doodle, and it would symbolize my mind wanderings.

11. On having a solid group of friends…

I normally don’t have those. I’m much more of a one-on-one person. But lately I’ve been gravitating towards this great group of people who I feel I can be myself around. I can come down to the lounge at all hours of the night wearing whatever, feeling however, and I could carry on a conversation with any of these people. They’ve seen me at my best and my absolute worst.

12. When you look particularly good on a Monday morning…

As I think I do today, it’s great to walk down the street feeling and looking great, and seeing people you recognize. Smile and wave, it’s good for you.

13. When I look at girls…

In class, or when I’m sitting behind them at the library, I fixate on their hair.

The color, the strands, the thickness, the way it pokes out or looks parched and bleached…

14. On trying to do work in bed…

JUST DON’T.

NEVER DO IT. IT NEVER WORKS. ALL YOU DO IS PUT YOUR HEAD DOWN AND FALL ASLEEP. GO TO THE LIBRARY, OR A STUDY LOUNGE. NEVER STUDY IN YOUR BED.

15. On getting a good night’s sleep…

It’s not just about how long you sleep, but when you sleep. I think I’m starting to buy into the theory of:

Early to bed, early to rise, makes a (person) man healthy, wealthy, and wise.

^modified quote by Ben Franklin.

sidenote – for my seminar class I was reading Ben Franklin’s autobiography. He’s actually a pretty calculative guy. I don’t know how to feel about it…

When you wake up at noon, you feel some guilt that you’ve wasted a huge chunk of your day. Even if you stay up late, you’re generally less productive compared to if you did your work earlier in the day. So if productivity is the goal…

16. Finally, coming up soon…

A multi-part reflection of my winter break cruise experience

A group guest post about ideal writing spaces

My experimentation with blackout poetry

My attempts at slam poetry, motivated by one of my best friends in high school

More from my food blog, which I have been neglecting as of late

Me neither! I thought that it worked for most people, but I’ve recently discovered that if anything, I am one of those people. Pushing my sleep schedule back a few hours (even if I get the same AMOUNT of sleep) has really hindered my productivity, especially being in a college environment where everyone else seems to be running on an earlier clock.
